Unlike most tour opertors, we don’t require a minimum number of passengers to book a place before the van starts rolling so its no surpise we are one of the easiest and most affordable tour companies in Costa Rica. Our prices are negotiable as we base them on the amount of people in our mini vans, mini buses or buses. You can count on us to have the right option for you!

Frequently asked questions

How much do your tours cost?

We offer flexible pricing in small groups of 4-12 people per vehicle, we never fill up our vehicles to ensure comfort and ride quality. Our rates are negotiable based on the amount of people per vehicle, customers typically find our rates to be 20-40% less than competitors or cruise sponsored excursions. We are known for providing the highest value and highest standards of quality, at an affordable price.

Where do you operate tours from?

Everywhere! Costa Rica is smaller than Lake Michigan or about the same size as West Virgina or Denmark. This give us the opportunity to provide our private and shared tour services with pickup from all hotels, cruise ship ports in all areas of the country!

How and when do I pay for my tour?

We pride ourselves in giving a hassle free booking experience. We do not need credit card information, just your name and email as well as the pickup location to confirm your booking. Payment is collected on the day of the tour (at the beggining or end) and we accept US dollars as well credit cards. Credit cards can present a slight problem as they are mobile so please inform us if you plan to pay with it.

What should I wear?

Costa Rica has micro climates all around the country meaning that it temperature and humidity will vary depending on which part of the country you are visiting. If you are visiting the provinces of Puntarenas, Guancaste and Limon then we recommend wearing shorts, hat, sunglasses, comfortable shoes and bringing sun block and bug spray, mosquitos are rare but its best to have some just in case. The places that can get chilly and windy are Monteverde, Poas Volcano, San Jose Capital and Heredia and for these destinations we recommend bringing a light jacket wearing long pants.

Are US dollars accepted in all areas?

Yes, tourism is one of Costa Rica's top 3 industries (first is electronics and second is agriculture) . US dollars are accepted in all tourism businesses and give your change back in US dollars. However supermarkets may give your change back in Costa Rican currency (colones). We advise using small denominations or paying with credit card to avoid confusion.

I am arriving by cruise ship, what time do your tours start?

We offer exclusive transportation for cruise members. Meaning that if you are arriving on Norwegian, Celebrity, Princess, Holland America, Oceania then you will be paired with fellow passengers coming off your ship. This gives us the flexibility needed to accomodate pick up and drop off based on the time your ship arrives and departs. We normally start our tours 30 minutes to 1 hour after your ship has docked. We always arrive back 1 hour or more before your boarding time. When booking we will notify you of the pickup time and meeting location for your specific ship.

Do you operate tours in small groups?

Yes. Our open/shared tours are transported in 17 passenger vans and are limited to 12 people per vehicle. If you are part of a large group/ travel agent, we can offer a single bus for 20, 40, 55 passengers or to split the group into multiple vehicles with a tour guide in each vehicle. We are highly flexible and our rates are negotiable based on volume and the amount of people per vehicle. We never sacrifice quality or cut corners. Our customers satisfaction is our top priority.

Testimonials & Reviews

One of the best tours ever! We've traveled with a lot of private tours, and this was one of our all-time favorites. Javier Vargas was our fantastic guide. He is a self-proclaimed "nature geek" and his enthusiasm was contagious. He would pull over to show us interesting plants or animals along the way and taught us so much about them. We enjoyed seeing the Macaw sanctuary and the crocodile river cruise, as well as a general tour of the area. Javier was always thoughtful and attentive and took care to make sure my 81 yo mom was comfortable. From what I hear from others, you can't go wrong with any of the guides with this company, but we especially loved Javier.

This was a great tour! We were met at the port and taken to our new air conditioned Mercedes van, complete with WiFi. We had the most wonderful young man for a guide. He was very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. It was amazing to be walking with him when he would stop, put up his tripod with a single lense binocular and find gorgeous birds in the trees. He would then use our cameras to get pictures. Most of the time I could not even find them with my own eyes. We also had a great tour of the crocodile river. Could not believe how many crocodiles we saw as well as other wildlife. Lunch was also provided on this tour. It was well worth the money. I would certainly recommend Thumbs Up - Day Tours if you are in Puntarenas. So much better than a large ship tour.
