One of the best tours ever! We've traveled with a lot of private tours, and this was one of our all-time favorites. Javier Vargas was our fantastic guide. He is a self-proclaimed "nature geek" and his enthusiasm was contagious. He would pull over to show us interesting plants or animals along the way and taught us so much about them. We enjoyed seeing the Macaw sanctuary and the crocodile river cruise, as well as a general tour of the area. Javier was always thoughtful and attentive and took care to make sure my 81 yo mom was comfortable. From what I hear from others, you can't go wrong with any of the guides with this company, but we especially loved Javier.

This was a great tour! We were met at the port and taken to our new air conditioned Mercedes van, complete with WiFi. We had the most wonderful young man for a guide. He was very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. It was amazing to be walking with him when he would stop, put up his tripod with a single lense binocular and find gorgeous birds in the trees. He would then use our cameras to get pictures. Most of the time I could not even find them with my own eyes. We also had a great tour of the crocodile river. Could not believe how many crocodiles we saw as well as other wildlife. Lunch was also provided on this tour. It was well worth the money. I would certainly recommend Thumbs Up - Day Tours if you are in Puntarenas. So much better than a large ship tour.

Monteverde Cloud Forest, Humming Bird & Butterfly Gardens

Includes: A/C Luxury Transportation, Naturalist Tour Guide, Selvatura Hanging Bridges, Humming Bird Gardens, Butterfly Gardens, Delicious Traditional Meal, Water & More

Come explore this dazzling once secret gem of Costa Rica with us! Open your eyes and ears to the wonders of the cloud forest. This lush and diverse terrain is full of natural beauty and wildlife, and you will explore it from the forest floor, from hanging bridges in the canopy, up close and at a distance. Come prepared to take it all in.

Your journey begins when you meet your friendly, English-speaking guide at the pier's entrance, who will escort you to a comfortable, large, air-conditioned passenger van. This all-day tour takes you to the Monteverde cloud forest reserve where you will enjoy a 1.9 mile (3 kilometer) hike through the forest and across suspended bridges that give you marvelous views. You will also get an up close and personal meeting with multicolored, seemingly bejeweled hummingbirds. A delicious and traditional Costa Rican lunch is provided, and you will learn much about the area’s history and ecology along the way. The tour price includes all ticket and entry costs and payment is collected when we return to the pier.

We will leave the port and make our way to the Panamerican Highway and enjoy a variety of landscapes as we go. We will turn off the main highway and ascend through small towns, pass cattle fields and farming areas until we arrive at the famous last stretch to Monteverde. This road is well known for being a bit bumpy. As a way to prevent their newly established sanctuary from inundation by tourism, the Quaker population, largely responsible for the area’s development, has long fought against paving its access roads. Early on this was successful, but it did not last. Today thousands of travelers visit Monteverde every year, making it one of the country’s most popular destinations. Trust us, it’s worth it.

Upon arriving, your naturalist guide will whisk you into the tropical wonder that is Monteverde. He or she will encourage you to use your senses while exploring the forest – to listen for the call of birds, touch the bark of trees, and smell the aroma of tropical flowers. A wide range of animals lives within the reserve, including sloths, agouti, jaguars, several types of monkeys, and many many birds—and it’s your guide’s job to help spot as many of these creatures as possible. Additionally, over 2,500 plant species and tens of thousand insect species reside here as well, providing even more educational fodder for your trek through the forest. One of the best places to spot animals is from any of the five raised bridges. With luck, you’ll spot a sloth up close, or the reluctant Resplendent Quetzal, a prize find for any bird watcher.

When your forest tour is complete, you will be treated to another spectacle, the humming bird garden. In a beautiful garden, enjoy watching more than 14 species of these flying jewels circling and darting all around you with their areal maneuvers. No other bird in the animal kingdom is as agile as the humming bird and they are a joy to watch.

By now all this nature watching will surely have worked up an appetite, which we will satisfy with a delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch that includes local fruits and vegetables.

At the end of this magnificent learning experience you will be taken back to your ship with unforgettable memories and hopefully plenty of great photos to share. If you want to truly experience the splendor of a renowned tropical cloud forest, this is the tour for you!
